STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – Arizona State Representative Jeff Weninger, Chairman of the House Commerce Committee, today introduced HB2704, legislation that creates a dedicated funding source needed to maintain Chase Field and keep it a world class facility for baseball and other events.

With the Arizona Diamondbacks’ current lease at Chase Field set to expire in 2027, discussions have focused on finding a solution to keep the team at its current home for the long term. At the same time, a dedicated funding source is necessary to maintain Chase Field to ensure it has the modern amenities that fans deserve and that critical building infrastructure like plumbing and electrical systems are repaired and up to date.

“The Arizona Diamondbacks are an indispensable part of our state’s identity and economy,” said Representative Jeff Weninger. “I’m proud to sponsor HB2704, which provides a dedicated funding solution to renovate Chase Field and ensure the Diamondbacks remain right here in Arizona where they belong. With the departure of the Coyotes last year, it is more important than ever to take proactive steps to protect the future of our teams and the venues that make them possible.”

Modeled after the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority, which maintains and funds State Farm Stadium, this legislation would recapture sales and income taxes associated with Chase Field and the Arizona Diamondbacks and direct them to a fund dedicated to repairing and maintaining the ballpark. It does not include the car rental surcharge, hotel bed tax, or facility use fee that is included in the Authority’s funding model. In addition to this fund, the Arizona Diamondbacks plan to directly contribute a majority of estimated cost for repairs – a direct reflection of their commitment to a strong future for the team, stadium, and community.
