STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – Arizona State Representative Leo Biasiucci has introduced legislation to promote physical activity in public schools while giving parents clearer information when choosing a school for their children.

House Bill 2395 establishes the Arizona School Fitness Program within the Arizona Department of Education to recognize public schools that voluntarily participate in nationally recognized physical fitness tests or events. Participating schools may include a fitness program designation on their annual school report cards, offering parents additional clarity when evaluating educational options.

HB 2395 creates no mandate and imposes no new requirements. Participation is entirely voluntary, preserving local decision making and allowing schools to choose programs that fit their students and communities.

“Our kids are spending more time on screens and less time moving, and that has real consequences,” Representative Biasiucci said. “HB 2395 gives schools the option to promote fitness, gives parents clear information, and reinforces the importance of student health. It keeps decisions local while supporting families who want schools that encourage active, healthy lifestyles.”

Arizona law currently requires physical education for students in kindergarten through eighth grade, but HB 2395 allows schools that place a stronger emphasis on fitness to clearly communicate those efforts. By recognizing schools that prioritize physical activity, the bill encourages healthier habits without expanding bureaucracy or government control.

The legislation aligns with the House Republican Majority Plan by supporting families, empowering parents, and helping students succeed. Healthy students are better prepared to learn and pursue opportunity, and parents deserve transparency when making decisions about their children’s education.

HB 2395 passed the House Education Committee on Tuesday with bipartisan support and now advances to the full Arizona House of Representatives.
