STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – In a strong move to combat the fentanyl crisis, State Representative Quang Nguyen’s legislation, HB2607, passed out of the Arizona House of Representatives late Tuesday, marking an important step in ensuring drug traffickers face serious consequences for flooding Arizona communities with this deadly poison. The bill establishes enhanced sentencing for those caught transporting at least 200 grams of fentanyl in a motor vehicle with the intent to sell, reinforcing Arizona’s commitment to public safety and law enforcement.

“Fentanyl is poisoning our children, destroying families, and taking lives at an alarming rate. Criminals who traffic massive amounts of this poison through our communities should face real consequences,” said Representative Nguyen, who chairs the Judiciary Committee. “This bill sends the clear message that if you bring fentanyl into our state and endanger our people, you will be held accountable.”

Under HB2607, individuals caught in possession of 200 grams or more of fentanyl in a motor vehicle with the intent to sell will face enhanced sentencing, with a minimum of five years, a presumptive term of ten years, and a maximum of fifteen years. Repeat offenders will see an automatic five-year increase in sentencing.

This legislation aligns with the House Republican Majority’s commitment to public safety and the rule of law, a core pillar of the Majority Plan. House Republicans are taking action to protect Arizona families, secure the border, and stop the flow of fentanyl into communities. HB2607 directly supports that mission by holding drug traffickers accountable and preventing repeat offenders from getting back on the streets.

HB2607 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
