STATE CAPITOL, PHOENIX – With strong bipartisan support, the Arizona House of Representatives has passed HB2484, legislation sponsored by State Representative Beverly Pingerelli to curb classroom distractions caused by excessive cell phone use and social media access during school hours.

“Teachers shouldn’t have to fight a losing battle against smartphones,” said Representative Pingerelli. “This bill hands them the tools to keep kids locked in on what matters—building a future, not chasing likes. I’m proud to see lawmakers from both sides agree: education beats distraction every time.”

HB2484 requires school districts and charter schools to adopt policies that ensure devices stay out of the way during instructional hours, allowing exceptions only for emergencies or teacher-approved academic tasks.

“We’re not talking about taking phones away from kids altogether,” Representative Pingerelli added. “We’re talking about putting common sense back in the classroom. Teachers shouldn’t have to compete with TikTok, and parents shouldn’t have to wonder if their kids are learning or just scrolling.”

House Republicans are leading efforts to strengthen Arizona’s schools, ensuring students receive the education they deserve—free from unnecessary distractions. HB2484 now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
